Know a gifted and talented student entering grades 5–12 in need of an exciting challenge this summer? Nominate them for a scholarship to a three-week program through the Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG), held at some of the finest colleges and universities in the country.
Renaissance Learning will reward one academically gifted and talented student demonstrating financial need with a full scholarship to experience the educational and social opportunities SIG offers.
SIG provides academically gifted students with a three-week educational experience. Central to the SIG residential program is the idea that by living where they learn, students become part of a community of like-minded young people and adults. These students are committed to academic excellence, social and emotional growth, and creative and recreational excitement. Together, students learn responsibility, self-motivation, community participation, and respect for others.
Learning opportunities not only include traditional subjects, but fun activities too—everything from fencing and building robots, to learning about crime scene investigation and digital photography.
Students selected will attend the SIG residential program at the nearest participating college campus.
Visit the SIG website for more information about session locations and dates.
As a sponsor, Renaissance Learning will pay for tuition, course materials, lab fees, and all room and board costs for the selected student (totaling approximately $5,000). No student selected will be turned down for financial reasons, including transportation.
To be eligible, students must demonstrate overall academic achievement and have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a national standardized assessment (STAR Reading™ or STAR Math™ scores will be accepted). In addition, students must be eligible for free- or reduced-lunch program, and must be entering into 5th–12th grades for the 2012-2013 school year.
- Verify that the nominated student meets all the necessary criteria to be eligible for a scholarship.
- Be creative in your letter of recommendation. Tell us why your star student should receive a scholarship and how will it benefit him or her. The nominating party must be the student’s past or present teacher/administrator.
- Encourage your student to let his/her personality shine through in the written essays.
- Double- and triple-check your nomination materials to ensure that all required items are included before mailing them in (see list below).
- Incomplete application materials will not be considered.
- Allow sufficient time when mailing materials in to meet the deadline.
All materials listed below MUST accompany nomination to be considered for a scholarship:
- Renaissance Scholarship Application, filled out in its entirety
- Standardized assessment scores at or above the 95th percentile—which could include STAR Reading or STAR Math
- Documentation that student qualifies for the free- or reduced-lunch
- A letter of recommendation from a past or present teacher/administrator on why the particular student deserves a scholarship
- A short student essay on why he/she would like to attend SIG
Send materials to Renaissance Learning, Attn: Carolyn Davis, 2911 Peach Street, Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54494, postmarked on or before March 9, 2012.
