Dr. Roger Farr is the author of many successful instructional models used by educators to teach millions of students at all levels. He incorporates his proven instructional approaches and more than 30 years of research and experience into the teacher and student materials of Successful Reader.

Over the years, Dr. Farr has authored numerous reading programs, served in countless roles in reading education, received numerous awards of recognition, and earned extensive experience in education, including:

Currently serves as Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus at Indiana University.

  • Since 1985, served as Associate Director of the Center for Innovation in Assessment, the hub of his extensive research and development activities.
  • Served for 11 years as co-editor of the Reading Research Quarterly, the world’s leading research journal in the field of language education.
  • Served with distinction in numerous professional organizations, most notably as president of the International Reading Association (IRA).
  • Served for 10 years as the Associate Director of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication.
  • Taught many levels of students, from elementary school through graduate school.
  • Participated in developing standardized tests, including the Iowa Silent Reading Tests and the Metropolitan Achievement Tests (MAT).
  • Authored educational programs used to teach millions of students at all levels, including having served with Dr. Dorothy Strickland as co-senior author of the Harcourt Reading series.
  • Named as the Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading by the IRA.
  • Served as a special consultant to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
  • Received the William S. Gray Citation of Merit for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to the Teaching of Reading.
  • Earned his Ed.D. in Reading and Educational Psychology at the State University of New York.
