How it Works Compare to Read 180

Compare Successful Reader to Read 180:
The Choice is Clear

Successful
Reader
A better approach... Than the typical approach...
Is more focused Successful Reader focuses on the most critical skill areas and motivational needs of struggling readers. This allows teachers to spend more time teaching and helps students practice the skills that have the greatest overall effect on reading achievement. Read 180® tries to cover many assorted skills of varied importance, diverting student attention from the most critical skill areas that research says will make the largest improvement with these struggling readers.
Is easy to implement With a straightforward instructional model, teachers are able to successfully implement the program and start helping struggling readers quickly. Some educators have experienced considerable difficulty and invested substantial time implementing the Read 180 program, making it difficult to help struggling readers.
Is more motivational Every Successful Reader class includes the two most powerful motivational activities, a read aloud and guided independent reading time, to build student motivation to read. In addition, the class time is built around student discussions and reactions to reading, putting readers at the center of the program. Compared to Successful Reader, Read 180’s 90-minute instructional model provides less than one-half the time for independent reading practice and modeled reading. Research shows that students rate these two activities highest as being most enjoyable(1)—and limiting these motivational activities takes away the fuel that drives student success.
Uses market-leading assessments recognized by prominent national reviewing organizations. Successful Reader utilizes Accelerated Reader Enterprise and STAR Reading, which have been recognized by What Works Clearinghouse, the National Center of Student Progress Monitoring, and other prominent organizations that review educational tools. Read 180 utilizes Reading Counts® and Scholastic Reading Inventory®, which have not been recognized by What Works Clearinghouse or the National Center of Student Progress Monitoring.
Is more affordable Successful Reader is a much more affordable reading
intervention program, less than half the cost of Read 180, and includes just what you need for a successful implementation.

Read 180 combines various sundry materials and very expensive software to support their high price. Why pay more?
