With more than 150 scientific research studies, Accelerated Reader is one of the few products with studies that met the selective criteria of the What Works Clearinghouse.

Because of Renaissance Learning’s dedication to scientifically based research, many of our tools have been favorably reviewed by various federally funded groups.


Accelerated Reader

There is consensus among the What Works Clearinghouse, National Center on Student Progress Monitoring, and Florida Center for Reading Research that Accelerated Reader is fully supported by scientifically based research.

Accelerated Math


Accelerated Math received the highest possible rating of "Convincing Direct Evidence" in all six categories for progress monitoring tools reviewed by the National Center on Response to Intervention (NCRTI). Its high marks confirm what teachers nationwide have said all along—Accelerated Math is truly in a class by itself. Accelerated Math also meets all National Center on Student Progress Monitoring criteria for scientifically based progress-monitoring tools.

Accelerated Reader, STAR Reading, Accelerated Math, and STAR Math

School Renaissance (using both Accelerated Reader & STAR Reading and Accelerated Math & STAR Math as key components of school reform) was rated in the top 3rd among 22 comprehensive school reform models by the federally funded Comprehensive School Reform Quality Center and was included in the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory’s prestigious Catalog of School Reform Models.


STAR Early Literacy


STAR Early Literacy received the highest rating of all screening assessments and among the highest ratings of all progress-monitoring tools by the National Center on Response to Intervention. In addition, STAR Early Literacy meets all National Center on Student Progress Monitoring criteria for scientifically based progress-monitoring tools, the Reading First assessment requirements according to University of Oregon coding form, and Washington State's Reading First Criteria for progress-monitoring assessments in vocabulary and comprehension. STAR Early Literacy was also favorably reviewed by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory and is on the Texas Commissioner's List of Reading Assessments.

STAR Math


STAR Math was among the highest-rated progress-monitoring tools reviewed in the General Outcomes Measurement category by the National Center on Response to Intervention, and meets all National Center on Student Progress Monitoring criteria for scientifically based progress-monitoring tools. (The review of STAR Math as a screening tool by the NCRTI is currently in process.)

STAR Reading


STAR Reading received the highest rating of all screening assessments and among the highest ratings of all progress-monitoring tools by the National Center on Response to Intervention. In addition, STAR Reading meets all National Center on Student Progress Monitoring criteria for scientifically based progress-monitoring tools, was favorably reviewed by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and was named as a top assessment in Reading First and Title I.
