James R. McBride, Ph.D., is vice president and chief psychometrician for Renaissance Learning. He was a leader of the pioneering work related to computerized adaptive testing (CAT) conducted by the Department of Defense.
McBride has been instrumental in the practical application of item response theory (IRT) and since 1976 has conducted test development and personnel research for a variety of organizations. At Renaissance Learning, he has contributed to the psychometric research and development of STAR Math, STAR Reading, and STAR Early Literacy. McBride is co-editor of a leading book on the development of CAT and has authored numerous journal articles, professional papers, book chapters, and technical reports.
