To explain the tenths to the right of the decimals, I compare the points to money, so a 0.5 pt book becomes a .50 cent book. I explain goals similarly: Jane needs to earn 1.7 points each week; she needs to put $1.70 of "mind money" into her "brain bank" each week so that she can reach her term goal of 15.3 points or $15.30. Some teachers at our school are even "paying" the students for points earned, using piggy banks to hold fake dimes, quarters, and dollars.
