Important Announcement About 2007–2008 Certification Criteria

As you know, this school year we’ve allowed schools to submit for Certification using either the “old” or the “new” criteria. This was done to allow for a smooth transition into using the new 30-minute criteria for the 2007-2008 school year.

We have heard both praise and concern for making the decision to require 30 minutes at 90% correct on AR quizzes. Because both sets of criteria are proven through research to raise reading growth, we have decided to continue to allow educators the flexibility, for their situation, to choose to certify under either the 30-minute criteria or 60-minute criteria.

Please see the outlined criteria below for the 30-minute and 60-minute criteria for the 2007-2008 school year.

Note: For 2007–2008, the median of points earned for 60-minutes of reading practice has been increased from 80% to 100%.

30-minute Certification Criteria for Reading Model Classroom

  • Implement Accelerated Reader Best Classroom Practices as identified by the techniques listed on the Classroom Checklist.
  • Elementary and Middle School: achieve 30 minutes of reading practice with 90% correct for 12 weeks (60 days of student instruction).
  • High School: achieve 20 minutes of reading practice with 90% correct for 12 weeks.
  • Achieve 100% of the goal for median points earned for the class.
  • Maintain no more than 10% of students averaging less than 90% correct on Reading Practice quizzes.
  • Classes of established readers maintain at least 80% of points earned from independent reading practice – rather than “read to” or “read with” practice.
  • Maintain no more than 10% of students “at risk” (low average percent correct or low points).

60-minute Certification Criteria for Reading Model Classroom

  • Implement Accelerated Reader Best Classroom Practices as identified by the techniques listed on the Classroom Checklist.
  • Elementary School: achieve 60 minutes of reading practice with 85% correct for 12 weeks (60 days of student instruction).
  • Middle School: achieve 45 minutes of reading practice with 85% correct for 12 weeks.
  • High School: achieve 30 minutes of reading practice with 85% correct for 12 weeks.
  • Achieve 100% of the goal for median points earned for the class.
  • Maintain no more than 10% of students averaging less than 85% correct on Reading Practice quizzes.
  • Classes of established readers maintain at least 80% of points earned from independent reading practice – rather than “read to” or “read with” practice.
  • Maintain no more than 10% of students “at risk” (low average percent correct or low points).

Master Classroom criteria will be available this fall. Please check the website at the beginning of next school year for the latest information. For questions about this change, please contact the Certification Department at 800-338-4204 or at model.classroom@renlearn.com.
