Successful Reader

The CCSS calls for "all students, including those who are behind, [to] have opportunities to encounter and comprehend grade level text." This is a particular challenge with students in intervention and Successful Reader, a reading intervention programs for Grades 4-12, meets the CCSS call by providing targeted scaffolding so that struggling students are still able to read grade-level texts.

The CCSS note that "new words and phrases are acquired not only through reading and being read to but also through direct vocabulary instruction and through purposeful classroom discussions around rich content." Successful Reader comprehensively responds to both parts of this equation. Reading and being read to are daily occurrences as are carefully structured and deeply engaging classroom discussions through Successful Reader's Instructional Book Club.

Professionally narrated recordings of Successful Reader titles provide daily read "alouds" for students, important because, as the CCSS notes, "by reading…aloud, teachers allow children to experience written language without the burden of decoding, granting them access to content that they may not be able to read or understand by themselves."

CCSS clearly calls for the reading of more non-fiction, and Successful Reader includes a content connection of non-fiction paired reading for every fiction title in the program.

According to the CCSS, "students need to learn to use writing as a way of offering and supporting opinions, demonstrating understanding of subjects they are studying, and conveying real and imagined experiences and events." Successful Reader includes numerous writing activities that address all of these areas.
