Educator's Symposiums on Accelerating Learning

Accelerated Math

The words “fewer, higher, and deeper” could easily be used to summarize the math standards of the CCSS. In many ways, the CCSS math standards echo calls from other recent initiatives such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum Focal Points and the National Math Panel.

Renaissance Learning has closely followed and participated in major movements with the math community and Accelerated Math’s Second Edition (2e) content libraries are perfectly suited for use with the CCSS because the approach we used to develop them directly parallels steps taken by the CCSS in developing their standards.

The CCSS notes that “the development of [their] standards began with research-based learning progressions” and Renaissance Learning is better positioned to support teachers with math learning progressions than most any other vendor because we have developed them and empirically validated them. Core Progress for Math—our research-based learning progression and the foundation of the Accelerated Math second-edition content libraries—provides “a focused, coherent progression of mathematics learning, with emphasis on proficiency and key topics” as recommended by the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008) and now required by the CCSS.

As the personalized practice component of any curriculum, Accelerated Math provides sufficient and appropriate practice essential to develop conceptual understanding, computational proficiency, and problem-solving skills.

Connecting mathematical practice to mathematical content is at the heart of our Accelerated math Best Practices professional development. Student engagement is encouraged through peer-assisted learning, think-alouds, small-group and one-on-one instruction.
